New sofa, some downs, and a lovely spring day

I won’t go about the negative to much as I feel like a moany old cow.

My new sofa arrived today, now as I don’t buy my digital camera until next week I can’t post a photo yet!

I saved up for this sofa; cash no credit card, its all mine.
Since my health took a dip I have avoided buying anything on credit as one day I could be on housing benefit.
Work
I had my meeting on Monday about working from home, first suggested to me that I work from home two days a week and come in three as I will have to at some point anyway, (I did point out that we are talking about my health now and not the future.

So HR asked for a compromise of splitting the Wednesday to a half day from home and half from home, despite me saying it was more practical for me to work from home in the morning that was turned down.

As a note I realise how angry I am about this as I am writing now.
I will see how things go; to be honest I don’t think this secondment will last long.
I am not going to be childish I will try my best, to be honest I feel like I am being treated like a piece of human meat.

Better news, what a lovely warm and sunny day today and when I buy that new camera I will have to go down to the park and take some photos of the ducks and Tudor hall.
Last evening season 2 of "Ashes to Ashes"
I have been thinking will I got for my fringe again, I have been growing my last one out since last year, I think I may go for a bette Page “V” style fringe and also a lip piercing (I did say I was not going to act childish, boo I lied).

Thank you to people who read this blog and your kind comments.
I will write some more of my early life tomorrow.

I am feeling proud

How Southend Borough Council assisted the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to improve transgender awareness across the authority.

Summary
As part of a review of their gender equality scheme, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH) has been working to raise awareness internally of transgender issues. ) The authority had previously working with Southend Borough Council (SBC) on a Peer Support project around carrying out effective Equality Impact Assessments. Through this contact, an employee from SBC who is currently undergoing transition attended LBTH to run a workshop session, looking at the issues around transgender, and giving people the opportunity to ask questions and gain a greater understanding of some of the issues that people may face, as they undergoing transition in the workplace.

Context
Society divides people into categories depending on the male or female appearance of an infant at birth. Reproductive organs, as well as brains, have distinctly different male and female characteristics. These physical differences define our sex, whereas gender identity describes the inner sense of knowing that we are men or women, and gender role describes how we behave in society. This is different from sexual orientation; that is, whether a person is sexually attracted to men, or women, or both or, very occasionally, neither.

Typically, sex appearance, gender identity and gender role are consistent. For a few people, the discomfort arising from the mismatch between the way they look and the way they feel may become extreme through childhood, adolescence and into adulthood. In adolescence, stress is aggravated by the onset of puberty, when the body develops even further in opposition to the innate gender identity.
People experiencing gender dysphoria often live for many years in the gender role that society expects of them until, finally, their distress becomes intolerable and they undergo transition to live permanently according to the gender role that is more comfortable for them. When gender discomfort is this severe, it is referred to as transsexualism. According to figures provided by the Gender Identity Research and Education Service (Gires), one in 1,000 school children suffer from gender dysphoria: roughly one pupil for every secondary school: though not all of them will seek gender reassignment surgery.
It is now quite common for those experiencing and/or expressing gender variance to describe themselves as trans men (female to male) and trans women (male to female). However, many of those who live full time in the new gender role wish to be regarded as ordinary men and women. When trans people start to live permanently in the new gender role, they and their families, partners and spouses are likely to experience great stress. Many trans people suffer discrimination in the workplace and elsewhere at this time.

The session:
An informal lunchtime session was developed and delivered which gave a personal account of Lucy’s journey over a number of years, culminating in a decision to seek gender reassignment surgery. The session covered issues around social change, and how change in social status, from being perceived as a heterosexual male to a transgender woman, can affect personal and workplace relationships. The presentation also covered the sorts of pressures that Trans people are subject to such as isolation, fear of physical attack and being bullied, or treated as an object of fun.

Participants were then asked to split into groups and engaged with, and then openly debated a questionnaire which was designed to challenge some of the myths and misconceptions that are often linked with transgender issues. This session also looked at attitudes and beliefs associated with gender, and how gender self identity shapes mind-sets in this context.

Next steps:
Hannah, could you add something here about how you are linking this to your GES work, etc?
Lucy, do you want to add anything here from a Southend perspective?

I use in some of my training workshops, yes we do get asked silly questions

Acceptable, unacceptable questions, statements and comments Have a think and deicide what you think.

•What toilet will you use?
•Does the surgery hurt?
•“no silly, I meant after”
•Why did you pick that name/what was your “real” name
•Good luck and if you ever need to talk, I’m here for you
•Do you date straight men or gay men?
•There's a transperson who lives in Wrexham/next door/on planet mars, you must know them
•When did you first know you were different?
•You look lovely and I can see you’re a lot happier
•Don’t be offended if I ask you this, but………………………………………
•I don’t understand it, and to be honest I don’t want to understand it.
•How have your family taken it?
•Where do you buy your clothes?
•(About surgery) are you nervous?
  • lets see you walk in heels
  • What if you regret it?

food for thought

"The problem with transsexual women is not that we are trapped in the wrong bodies. This truth is a easily corrected with hormones, doctors and sharp scalpels.
The problem is that we are trapped in a society which alternates between hating and ignoring or tolerating and exploiting us and our experience, and more importantly, we are trapped in the wrong minds.
We have, too many of us for too long, been trapped in too much self-hate".

Me and my friend Jenny- Easter Monday 2009

Jenny also writes a blog

Friday 17th April 2009

Yes I have been a bad girl, I phoned in “sick” again.
As I am a typical Virgo I had to get organised, so I phoned my HR rep at work and said they need to organise my working from home schedule.

Working from home

About September 2008 once my HRT dosage had gone up I started getting some side effects, and had to see my Doctor, I was given tablets to counter this, but hey they also have side effects! Working full time became a big struggle and I did not want to lower my dosage as I was aware that I coming up to be referred for gender reassignment surgery.

And in my last secondment I was able to work from home three times a week and guess what it worked!

I started a new secondment April 1st (honest) and they have not got around to sorting out my working from home connection and I struggled so much last week.

I decided me, HR and my new line manager need to meet on Monday to resolve this and structure my working pattern (told you im a Virgo)

Now I do worry I may end up unemployed if work get tired of me and my "sick record", and I have put my name on the council housing list, but I want a life, not to be a zombie after work.

Also I expect to get my op date soon and want to be fit for this.

I did have to go into town as some fresh food was required, and as I am a lush, some wine for tonight.

Feeling ill and going into town while watching for work colleges is not easy!
I managed a wilkos trip to buy some candles, buy my fresh food and yes my wine.

Operation “town” visit over I settled into bed and read, then slept (I am like my cat).

After writing this I am going to watch “Hancock” I love Will Smith films and will write some more later.

Weather update
Southend is cold, wet and overcast :-(

Plumstead - London 1970

London – 1970

At the age of seven (scary to think how old I am now!) was when I first become aware that I was “different”

I grew up in a very working class environment and council estate, this was an environment of “set” gender roles, boys were boys and girls were girls, no blurring of the gender model.

It was also a environment of racism, domestic violence (almost worn like a badge of honour by the cavemen and had to be accepted by the women as there were no places like “The dove Project” at this time, if there was then all her self esteem would have been stripped away and the poor woman would not have been able to leave the fist happy and shouting low life, Sadly to say my mum was in the “married to a caveman club”.

With this in mind, when I watched the girls playing hopscotch and skipping, a little voice in my head was saying “be careful” I was scared that even my thoughts could be heard.
When you have a dad who hits you for nothing, my young mind never dared thought what I would get for putting on my sisters clothes.

Dressing
A strange term this, one now used by my family as their acceptance of my “condition” one used by transvestites or even their own way of identifying a transsexual “so you dress all the time then”? (Well I don’t walk about naked)

For me as a transsexual woman “dressing” as a girl was my way of expressing my gender, not for a fetish reason, or a “hobby”
In a world where gender roles were so set, wearing a dress and a ribbon in my hair was walking over to the dark side and shattering my public gender role.

When I first wore my sister’s clothes I remember a feeling of guilt and extreme fear and also anger, the anger was “why was I born a boy?”

As I went through school acting (very badly) in my gender role as a boy, my gender expression never went away and yes I was even caught when I was 13 (very quickly dismissed as “a phase” by my parents) At this stage I told my dad I wanted to be a girl (I figured if he was going to kill me, I may as well make those bruises’ count)

Funny enough it did not hurt anymore when he hit me, I was kind of numb inside and hey I wanted to die (more about the suicide attempts for another journal.

By the time I was 13 going through to 15, apart from wanting to be “Sandy from “Grease” my puberty did come, it was a late one for me, and still the horrible day did arrive.

I now know from looking back what a average teenage boy was doing at this time in their life, I wasn’t, I never “played” with myself, or explored my hateful changing body, I had no penis fascination like the typical boy that never goes away throughout their life to manhood

To me it seemed natural not to masturbate; I had such a low body image and did not want to look at it in any way, I hated it.

Added to the issue was me being diagnosed with cancer in my bowel and I had to have a ileosotomy operation (large intestine removed) and had a “bag”
This happened August 1st 1979 just after my 16th birthday.

This was also the time I first become aware of words like “transvestite” “drag queen” and “fetish” (I write my fetish journals later!)

So I was a screwed up teenager, adding to the fact that I nearly died during my operation and weighed 6 stone at one stage.

Could life get any worse?

More to come soon

Friday 17th April

Not a good star today, I have been awake half the night in discomfort and pain.
Also I been worried a lot over my work and health situation.

I have emailed HR today to ask if a plan can be outlined for me to work from home as it is not happening at the moment!

whinge over!
later I will write some more, I am of to make some coffee and read in bed for a bit.

Randon mention of Quieten tarantino for this blog

Yes I do like his films, so random link?
Well you may find my blog bounces back to 1970 t0 2003 to a daily blog!
Like the “Q” man I will put a heading to help people that are if people want to read or understand my ramblings.

Thursday 16th April

Well today I have been of work sick, I am meant to be working from home 3 days a week, in my new secondment (I write more about this later!) this has not yet been set up and I am struggling.

Question why is it when your health is not good, there never is any budget left to extend a secondment? I will be working in every department at work at this rate.

You know I am still glad I started to climb of that “rat race” for money and success.
Look at me the rebel.

Well after reading in bed, for the record it is a Kelley Armstrong book an author I have just got into and already I love her books.

I have then watched a DVD “man on a wire” this is a good documentary about Philippe Petit, a French guy who walked across the twin towers in 1974.

After Eastenders tonight, of to bed to read and try to make work tomorrow.
And also blog more.

Me December 2007

Why "The last resort"?

Why did I call this blog site "The Last Resort"?
well I love music and always have my Ipod with me, last week as I was on the train to London "Last resort" by Papa Roach come on and it brought me back to May 2006.

May 2006 was the time I realised I had to stop living a life of self bullshit and do what I wanted, and most of all overcome all my fears since I was a child.

From the age of 7 I was not comfortable with my gender, my place in the gender hierarchy, my body, my self image. this was 1970 and as a child was not aware of words like "trans" "transsexual" or "transvestite" I was just aware of feelings of fear and shame.

From the age of of 7 I was looking at the world through fingers covering my face trying to avoid being discovered for who or what I realy was.

These stayed with me a lot during my whole life until 2006.
I had not realised that I had been living a life of self denial as I never thought I could change my birth gender, or feared more what I could lose, career, public face etc, stupid really isn't it, surely being true to yourself is more important.

It is easy to say now, at this time in my life to the outside world I was a 43 year old man with a very resonable career, The journey to becoming Lucy seemed like trying to swim the English Channel after one swimming lesson.

May 2006 was "the last resort"

Last resort by papa roach
"Cut my life into pieces I've reached my last resort, suffocation, no breathing Don't give a fuck if I cut my arms bleeding Would it be wrong, would it be right If I took my life tonight, chance are that I might Mutilation out of sight and I'm contemplating suicide Cause I'm losing my sight, losing my mind Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine Nothing's alright, nothing is fine I'm running and I'm crying I never realized I was spread too thin Till it was too late and I was empty within Hungry, feeding on chaos and living in sin Downward spiral, where do I begin It all started when I lost my mother No love for myself and no love for another Searching to find a love upon a higher level Finding nothing but questions and devils Cause I'm losing my sight, losing my mind Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine Nothing's alright, nothing is fine I'm running and I'm crying I can't go on living this way"

May 2006 I made a appointment to see my doctor asking to be referred for Gender reassignment, I wanted to start living and for once say "so what"

I had been training to be a counsellor and this involved a journey of self discovery going back to my inner child and the fears that I had hidden from, transctional anyasis has a lot to answer for!

first blog

I could blame my friend Jenny for starting a blog as she blogs every 2 minutes (only joking hun!)
Seriously I wanted to start one for a while and have been writing personal journals as part of my counselling training over the last 3 years.

So why start now? well as a proud trans-woman I want to write about my experiences and bare my soul! and I am now at the stage where I have major surgery soon.

Also my health has not been brilliant over the last six months and it makes you look back over your life and think.

I do identify as a woman, I wear my trans status mainly for my work in training (yes I been asked and paid to run gender indentity workshops, and yes I am good at it) but also there will always be trans - children, or trans people discovering who they are, I hope this blog helps.
